1640: Portugal becomes independent again after the Portuguese under the leadership of John IV drive out the Spaniards.
1887: Portugal secures the secession of Macau from China's Ching court.
1918: The Danish parliament passes an act giving independence to Iceland.
1921: With the United States and Britain as mediators, representatives of China and Japan hold negotiations on the issue of the Shantung dispute on the sidelines of a meeting in Washington.
1922: Henry Pu Yi, the last emperor of the Manchu dynasty, and Wan Yung, daughter of Yung Yuan, a former minister in the Ching court, hold their wedding ceremony in Beijing's Forbidden City.
