CANBERRA, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - Labor is paving the way to remove the 30 per cent rebate on private health insurance, Treasurer Peter Costello said today.
Mr Costello said Opposition Leader Simon Crean was threatening to take away the rebate, which costs taxpayers more than $A2 billion ($US1.12 billion) per year.
"The private health insurance rebate ... is a tax cut to give people 30 per cent back on their private health insurance," he told reporters in Melbourne.
"Mr Crean is obviously softening up the electorate to take it away."
Removing the rebate would add about $A700 ($US392.35) or $A800 ($US448.40) to annual health insurance premiums, Mr Costello said.
