SUNDERLAND, England, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - Nissan Motor Co. (TSE:7201) began producing its new Micra subcompact at its plant here Friday, aiming to sell 170,000 units in Europe in the first year from January and about 160,000 units annually after that, company officials said.

The new Micra is the European version of the March subcompact, which Nissan launched in Japan last March. Old Micra models have sold at a pace of about 140,000 units per year in Europe.

Nissan President Carlos Ghosn regards the new Micras as key to improving the automaker's performance in Europe. The firm launched production in Sunderland in 1984 as the first Japanese carmaker in Europe, and has been exporting to the European continent. Earnings at the operation have weakened due to ...
