CANBERRA, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) said three-quarters of the nation's farmers have faced their driest year in almost a century.
The national forecaster said today in most cases farmers had recorded some of the lowest rainfall figures on record.
"The rankings indicate that rainfall received in 2002 in around 75 per cent of the mainland crop growing regions ranks in the bottom 10 per cent of observations," it said in its latest crops forecast.
"The states with the most serious rainfall deficiency in 2002 were NSW followed by Victoria.
"In most regions, crop development was also hindered by low subsoil moisture, particularly in the northern crop areas."
