KAOHSIUNG, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - President Chen Shui-bian said in Kaohsiung that credit unions of the farmers' and fishermen's associations are different from ordinary financial institutions.
Therefore, he noted, the government should deal with them differently.
Chen made the remarks while visiting the Farmers' Association of Kaohsiung City on Sunday, which did not send representatives to take part in the Nov. 23 demonstration in Taipei by farmers and fishermen from all over the island at the request of Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh.
The recent takeover of 36 credit unions by commercial banks under the order of the Ministry of Finance were among the major reasons why the farmers and fishermen organized the demonstration.
The president said that the government fully understood that the farmers and fishermen organized the demonstration as a way to vent their complaints and present their demands.
He asserted that their appeals had been heard and stressed that the government's stance of providing the best service for the farmers and fishermen has not changed.
