SYDNEY, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - NSW residents have been asked to reduce their water consumption to stave off compulsory water restrictions, with compulsory water restrictions predicted to be in place by Christmas.
However, one council in the NSW Southern Highlands is already imposing restrictions on consumption.
Compulsory restrictions will take effect in the Wingecarribee Shire Council tomorrow with rangers to hand out on-the-spot fines to offenders.
Energy Minister Kim Yeadon said Sydney Water had begun contacting all councils in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Illawarra to ask rangers to join the enforcement program for water restrictions.
"This means an army of officers would be ready to fine people who do not comply with water restrictions if or when they become mandatory," Mr Yeadon said.
"We are in the midst of the worst drought since 1985 and experienced the six driest months on record."
