CANBERRA, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - Prime Minister John Howard would not confirm whether he would remain as leader of the coalition at the next federal election despite mounting speculation he will stay on to see out the terrorism crisis.
He refused to reveal details about discussions with Treasurer Peter Costello on the prime ministership.
Mr Costello last week said the talks went no further than issues already made public by the prime minister.
Mr Howard has said he would consider his future as prime minister after his 64th birthday next July and Mr Costello, the Liberal deputy, is considered the man most likely to replace him if he retires.
"I don't want to speculate about that," Mr Howard said of his plans in a Channel Nine interview.
When asked about the Costello discussions, he replied: "I don't have anything to add."
Mr Howard was also reticent to speculate on Opposition Leader Simon Crean's leadership difficulties.
