CANBERRA, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - Tax cuts might be on the agenda if they could be afforded, according to Prime Minister John Howard.
Mr Howard said the government still believed in reducing taxes when it had a capacity to do so.
"When you have a low level of government debt and a surplus, there comes a time when people might want some of the surplus returned by way of general or specific tax cuts," he told the Nine Network on Sunday.
"I'm not making any promises in any particular areas, I'm just stating the principle that if you've got a bit left over, the automatic assumption shouldn't be `Oh whacko, we'll spend it'.
