The National Gallery in London produced its first technical publication in 1940, and in it the museum's first scientific adviser began the tradition, which has continued ever since, of publishing the results of the technical examination of paintings. The pictures in that first book were mainly X rays but there were also two infrared photographs of a section of Cosme Tura's Virgin and Child Enthroned. The primary benefit of these examinations is to reveal what lies beneath the paint.
