From 1526 until 1918, the Habsburgs dominated Bohemia. Briefly in 1618, a rebellion took place that deposed the Habsburg Catholic emperor Ferdinand II. The infamous Defenestration of Prague, when two senior officials of the court were thrown out a window of the castle, led to the Thirty Years Warm Europe. In 1619, the Bohemian diet chose to be ruled by the Protestant Frederick, elector of the German Palatinate, but within a year his forces were conquered. Bohemia, no longer a kingdom, became an imperial crown land again under the Habsburg domain but with less independence. The centuries that followed were marked by more political, religious, and martial turmoil, but artistic creativity continued unabated.
