The Portland Museum of Art in Maine has recently completed a large renovation project that unites its three architecturally diverse buildings: the McLellan House (1800-1801), the L. D. M. Sweat Memorial Galleries (1911), and the Charles Shipman Payson Building (1983). The museum is now able to display many more works of art than previously The architect for the project was Pamela W. Hawkes of Ann Beha Architects in Boston.

The McLellan House is generally considered to be the most important extant building by the housewright John Kimball Sr. and one of Portland's finest structures of this period. Kimball used pattern books by Abraham Swan and William and James Pain for much of the elaborate interior woodwork The McLellan House interiors have been interpreted to enable visitors to learn about American architecture, social history, and decorative arts. Reproductions of wallpapers and carpets that might have been used in the house in the early nineteenth century form the backdrop for the museum's collection of Federal and Empire ...
