On May 4, 2001 in Westerlo, New York, Matthew T. Golden, 18, and Diana A. Johnson, 18, were involved in a car accident that sent the vehicle driven by Golden careening through the wall of a garage. Both Golden and Johnson were rendered unconscious.

Joseph A. McGuire, 44, witnessed the accident from a nearby home. Running to the scene, he broke through the garage door and went to the driver's side of the burning car.
