VENICE -- More than a month after its grand opening ceremony -- and roughly seven months off schedule -- the new, $12 million Hatchett Creek Bridge opened to traffic at 5 a.m. Thursday.

At 16 feet higher than its predecessor, which awaits demolition in about two weeks, the new drawbridge affords a "full landscape view" of Venice Island, said Cathy Linder, program director for Venice MainStreet.

Motorists will have less time to enjoy the view, but that's a good thing.

With a clearance of a few inches above 30 feet, the new bridge will allow most power boats to go under without either draw …
