During 17 years as a police officer, Tom Burtnett, 53, never had to use his firearm while on duty. But during the past eight years as night shift worker at CC's Food Mart in Birmingham, Alabama, he has been robbed nine times and has shot three thugs. According to the October 8th Birmingham News, "he shot one robber twice in the leg, another fatally in the chest and in June 2001 critically wounded another man, who is now in prison."
Subsequently, at about 3:20 a.m. on October 7th, a man wearing a 1960s-style afro wig and carrying a shotgun entered the convenience store. The man placed the shotgun on the counter with his finger on the trigger. "He was shouting, 'Give me the money! Give me the money!'" Burtnett told News reporter Carol Robinson. "I backed up to where the cigarettes are and he reached his hand inside the counter. He got the whole till out."
Burtnett recalls waiting for an opportunity to pull his pistol from the waistband of his pants, but in this instance it was not necessary.
