"MARTA" is the acronym for Georgia's Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. At about 6:30 p.m. on October 17th, Duluth resident Simona Edery, 31, was in the Peachtree Center MARTA Station when a mugger tried to snatch her purse. He had apparently followed the small, slender woman into the station on the assumption that she would offer little resistance. When she fought back and slapped him, he stabbed her in the neck with a pocket knife, took her purse, and fled.

Steve Miles, 42, is a 20-year Marine Corps veteran who works as a security guard at AmericasMart across from the station. Upon hearing the injured woman's screams, Miles noticed a man scurrying past him headed away from the commotion. Miles wondered why he was not attempting to help, so he asked the fellow what he was doing. When the man began running, Miles chased him through traffic and tackled him.
