Richard Petty scrunched up his face for a moment, underneath his wrap-around shades and the black cowboy hat blossoming with a spray of feathers. He wanted to make sure he got the words right as he recollected the clever benediction to his career.

"You'd like to go out in a blaze of glory," Petty said. "I just went out in a blaze. Wasn't a whole lot of glory involved."
