At the beginning of April 1945, after the United States Army had taken the Rhineland and Hesse against very little resistance, their vanguard, the 1107th Combat Engineer Corps, advanced toward Thuringia and the city of Eisenach. A few miles outside the city the corps passed the Schloss Augustenau in Herleshausen (Fig. 3), the home of Marianne Cecilie Auguste (1913-1983), princess of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld, a great-great-granddaughter of Friedrich Wilhelm III (r. 1797-1840), king of Prussia, She and her children and servants had fled the castle just before the arrival of the Americans.
