LETTER TO HOLBEIN, THE YOUNGER 
 
   Holbein, how is it your Last Supper 
   Compels me so? I'm no believer but I 
   Look and, somehow, it doesn't really matter. 
   Your worn blue sheet of Heaven stills on 
   In its dusk, chilling to a cobalt night 
   Not yet quite attained. I almost feel the breeze 
   Fingering the branches outside the rear 
   Window as it rises up from behind 
   Over the table and its starched cream cloth 
   That glows exactly off-white, still showing 
   Creases from the iron's anachronism, as 
   The hubbub rises, as the faces act out 
   Their dramas, trapped in paint's unyielding stage, 
   Apostles whose very names I now know 
   Only approximately. Is that Judas 
   Nursing his hatred like an over-priced 
   Drink in a posh bar? Is that one there ...
