SIR: During a recent visit to the Kimberley and the Northern Territory, my wife and I were intrigued by references in official signs to an Aboriginal man named Jandamarra as a "freedom fighter". It appears that he and at least one accomplice murdered a white settler, and stole cattle, then also killed police sent to apprehend them. They then carried out more such actions before they were shot and killed.
Why are Ned Kelly and his gang not referred to as "freedom fighters"? Or perhaps they are, in Melbourne universities and on the ABC.
