SIR: Our critics (Letters, September 2002) miss the point of our survey of the unresolved controversies surrounding Birdsell's work. We made no claims to being scientific specialists; our journalistic account simply compared the views of rival academics in this debate and gave the less well known view the last word. Readers may accept, reject or, better still, investigate further for themselves. In particular we highlighted Birdsell's unanswered challenge, something our critics also seem to have missed.
