Although Edouard Manet studied for six years with Thomas Couture, his painting style was primarily influenced by studying the old masters in the Musee du Louvre in Paris, particularly the works of the Spanish painters Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Jusepe de Ribera and--most importantly--Diego Velazquez. Manet was so enamored of Velazquez that in 1865, following his only visit to Spain, he wrote to the art critic and poet Charles Baudelaire that Velazquez was "the greatest painter that I've ever seen."
Seventeenth-century Spanish art was not well known in France before the Revolution, but after the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the nineteenth century, works by Spanish artists made their way into French public and private collections. Manet was particularly drawn to the ...
