Abstract
Despite convincing literature to the contrary, the notions of `transition shock' and the `storm and stress' of adolescence persist in views on primary-secondary school transfer. This paper reports on the `voices' of some Australian students as they have anticipated and experienced primary-secondary transfer. It sets these findings in a broader consideration of transition and reports the views of young adolescents. It suggests that although transfer is an important part of the transition process, the adaptation phase' during which students are adjusting to secondary school, may be the more critical.
