The question came up over a cold one the other day: Who is the best running back in NFL history? With Emmitt Smith chasing, then eclipsing Walter Payton's all-time rushing mark, it was a hot debate--but not one resolved by numbers alone. (The call here: Sweetness.)

Isn't it great, then, that we fantasy football freaks can quantify a player's value based solely on statistics? Whether they tell the whole story isn't the point: How did Priest Holmes bust for 200 yards and three TDs on Sunday? Why was Jeff Garcia held to 150 yards and picked off twice? After all is said and done, who cares? All that matters is this: Who was in your starting lineup?

Of course, we need to know the whys and bows when we're making out those lineups, so let's have a look at the Week 9 matchups:

First, two of the poorer pass defenses (the Chiefs' and Saints') are off this week, and the pass defenses of the Lions, Vikings and lets will be wasted on opponents who rely first and foremost on the run.
