Just a few weeks ago, I thought the Pac-10--which seemed to have the most good teams from top to bottom--was the best conference in college football this season. Well, there has been some serious slippage. Oregon has zero ability to defend the pass. Oregon State, UCLA and Cal are dangerous, to themselves as well as to others. And Washington is just plain awful The Pac-10 has a lot of teams that could beat most anybody, but it's certainly a league that I and many others overestimated.

If feels like a good point in the season to rank the conferences, so here are my top five ... and then some.

1. Big 12. This is where the best defense is played and where you'll find the most diversity among offenses.

2. Pac-10. USC is the only team with a top-notch defense, and it's playing the best ball right now. But it probably won't matter because the Trojans lost early to Washington State, which is undefeated in league games and has an advantageous schedule.
