POWER companies provoked anger yesterday when they refused to pay compensation to customers left without electricity after the storms that battered Britain.
As some families endured their fifth day without power, company bosses said the high winds were beyond their control and they would withhold payments of up to GBP150.
Normally, customers are guaranteed GBP50 compensation after the first 18 hours without electricity and GBP25 for every additional 12 hours.
But most of Britain's nine power providers yesterday said they intended to use a get-out clause which allows them to escape making the payments in "exceptional" circumstances.
The dodge could save them millions of pounds.
