JAKARTA, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - Indonesia is expected to face a shortage of cement in 2006 or 2007 due to rising domestic demand, while new foreign investment in this sector is not forthcoming, an official said.
"Our domestic demand for cement grows about 10 per cent a year. With this assumption, we are going to face a lack of cement in the year 2006 or 2007," Tony Tanduk told a seminar here Thursday.
The director of downstream chemical industry of the Ministry for Trade and Industry said this situation was worsened by the absence of new investment in the cement industry sector due to an unconducive political situation.
The total worth of investment to build a new cement factory is expected to reach 100 or 200 US dollars per ton of cement, he said.
Since 1999, Indonesia's cement production capacity has been stagnant. Annual production just totals 47.32 million tons.
