MANILA, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - The House of Representatives has urged the state-run National Power Corp. (Napocor) to immediately shut down its coal-fired power plants due to the danger they pose to human and animal life, vegetation and the coastal ecosystem.
In a joint public hearing by the House Energy and Ecology Committees on House Resolution 700, it was revealed that burned coal emitted by coal-fired power plants emit toxins and carcinogens that pose real danger to human life and the ecosystem.
"Philippine cities are among the most polluted in the world, with the level of pollution being five times over the limit by international standards, "Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri (3rd District, Bukidnon), author of HR 700 said.
While the House said that the continued operation of the Napocor coal-fired power plants are not really critical to the economy because of the excess power supply, Napocor officials said that the advocated closure of the coal-fired power plants would affect the reliability of power supply in Luzon.
