TAIPEI, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - President Chen Shui-bian said his administration will bravely face up to the issues regarding opening direct transport links with mainland China even though those issues remain complicated and sensitive.

Chen made the declaration while meeting with a group of outstanding businesspeople as well as heads of outstanding foreign trade offices in Taipei, along with CEOs of Taiwan branches of various foreign companies.

Noting that any form of direct cross-strait shipping and air links, including point-to-point chartered flights, requires bilateral negotiations, Chen said he is hopeful that mainland China can show sincerity by sitting down to talk with Taiwan about all relevant issues.

As direct transport links involve exercise of public authority, Chen said cross-strait negotiations on those issues must be guided and handled by the government.

"The private sector can never replace the government in this regard," Chen stressed, adding that so long as mainland ...
