The European Commission will begin trading in carbon dioxide emissions in 2005. Information on how much carbon dioxide a company emits will be of crucial importance over the next 2 years to company management and shareholders in terms of making profit projections. The Kyoto agreement will require the major industrial companies to begin trading in global greenhouse emissions from 2008. The EC wants companies to start 3 years before this in order for them to acquire the necessary experience. So far in Europe only the UK has traded in carbon dioxide emission rights.
