Former vice president Walter Mondale kicked off his political campaign for the Democrats in a key US Senate seat with just five days to go until midterm elections.

The 74-year-old, who was called out of retirement in Minnesota after the death of Senator Paul Wellstone, promised to make the Republican handling of the economy one of his top priorities if elected.

"I think it's slipping," he told his first press conference following his official nomination by the state Democratic Party late Wednesday.

"I think there's an undercurrent of distrust about our nation's economy that requires change and reform."
