PHILIP GREEN, the billionaire owner of retail group Bhs, is assembling a consortium to bid for the international television rights for Premier League football. The offer could be valued at up to GBP700million.
Green, currently contemplating a takeover bid for the Arcadia stores group, believes English clubs can increase their revenues significantly from the sale of their broadcast rights overseas, particularly as England made an impact in this summer's World Cup. Players such as David Beckham and Michael Owen are hugely popular in the Far East.
Green has spoken to Premier League chairmen about the make-up of the consortium which, if successful, would sell the rights on. The present three-year contract, which has two years to run, realised GBP178million, giving each club about GBP3million a year.
The rights were bought by a consortium that included sports marketing group Octagon CSI, TWI, News Corp and SportFive.
The Financial Sunday Express has learned that Green's view, supported by many club chairmen and the Premier League itself, is that this figure could be improved massively.
