The Look East Policy (LEP) was first introduced in late 1981 by Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian Prime Minister. His main aim was for Malaysians to emulate the positive values of Japanese society; to inculcate discipline, hard work, sound management techniques and learn advanced technology from Japan. The Prime Minister was impressed with the economic success of Japan.
