A thought on people's names. The names of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York were read during a ceremony held at Ground Zero on Wednesday.
No death is more miserable than one that is presented as a statistic rather than as a personal tragedy. Each victim of the attacks had his or her own life and family. Listening as the names of all 2,801 victims were read, those at the ceremony must have gained an appreciation of the indescribably enormous loss of life. The loss would not have been aptly described if the casualties had been treated as numbers.
