We shall never forget the sad faces we saw at Lacor, Agwe, Bungatira and Irianga-Lalya village in Gulu.

Hungry and angry faces of desperation, sickly children and a hopeless people resigned their fate.

About 500,000 Acholi have been displaced in the north and have for 15 years only known the misery called "protected villages" -- camps for internally displaced people (IDPs).

Their pain is caused by the unending war between the UPDF and Joseph Kony's LRA rebels.

The LRA is a bizarre offshoot from the defunct Uganda People's Democratic Army (UPDA) and Alice Lakwena's Holy Spirit Movement that first fought President Yoweri Museveni's government in 1986.

A whole generation of Acholi has been born and raised in these "protected" villages.
