Rabat, Morocco (PANA) - Some 3.22 million tourists visited Morocco in the first eight months of 2002, against 3.40 million tourists during the same period in 2001, a drop of 5.4 percent, the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) said Wednesday.

The drop blamed partly on the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the US, saw a decrease of 1.9 percent in the number of Moroccan nationals abroad that visited the country, which stood at 1.58 million by 31 August, against 1.61 million the same period last year.

The number of foreign visitors dropped by 9.9 percent from 1.67 million (January-August 2001) to 1.51 million during the same period this year.
