At around 1 a.m. on August 18th, two men, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, forced their way into a home in the northwest section of Shelby County, Tennessee. The homeowner, 26-year-old Jeffrey S. Rushing, confronted them armed with his own gun. Before the intruders could get off a shot, Rushing fired several times, striking Jerry L. Brooks, also 26, at least three times. As his accomplice, apparently not injured, fled, Brooks collapsed and died in the front yard of the Rushing residence.
