British Major Gordon Forbes advanced his men southward as the spearhead and the center of the British invasion force. His men broke out of the woods, into the wheat field and toward a farm house known locally in that upstate New York area as "Freeman's Farm." He was trying to secure some high ground near the American encampment at nearby Beamis Heights on the Hudson River shore.
