Ellis Larkins was one of the most elegant pianists in jazz. A supremely tasteful and refined player, he was a favourite accompanist of such singers as Ella Fitzgerald, with whom he recorded two classic duo albums in the 1950s.
His light touch, understated and sensitive accompaniment, and exquisite harmonies earned him a cult following, especially in the 1970s when he drew large audiences to his residencies at Manhattan ''piano rooms''.
