Taipei, Oct. 20 (CNA) Registration of candidates for the Dec. 7 elections of mayors and councilmen began Sunday, with incumbent heads of both Taipei and Kaohsiung cities signing up for the race.

Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou formally announced his candidacy Sunday by filing documents with the Election Committee of Taipei City. He also presented a deposit of NT$2 million (US$57,142) to the committee as required by law.
