A tornado struck a tiny riverside community early Thursday, killing at least five people as thunderstorms continued a path of destruction across the South. Another person died earlier in Louisiana, and a car crash death near Charlotte was also blamed on the storms.

Dozens of homes were destroyed in Riegelwood, on the Cape Fear River about 20 miles west of the coastal city of Wilmington, according to Gov. Mike Easley's office.
