I completely disagree with the recent "rant" [Winter 2005] about an exhibit promoted by PETA to end oppression of humans and animals. PETA's display simply shows the similarities between past abuses to humans and current abuses to other species. People's oppressive mindsets need to be changed. Other species suffer just as much as humans and deserve to live without suffering. There once was a day when groups of people were considered "below" the rest of society, and consideration of their welfare was considered laughable. Today, we think upon this thought of our ancestors as completely unacceptable. But we treat other species the same way today. I'm sure our future generations will look upon our generation's acts toward animals with distaste.

One of PETA's examples is showing the similarities between how fairly recently in our country we enslave Blacks and how we enslave elephants today in circus acts. Elephant are very social creatures that need miles of land to roam. In the circus, they have no companionship, are trapped in cages, and are trained with beatings.
