Tokyo, Oct. 17 (Jiji Press)--At his historic first meeting with Gen. Douglas MacArthur in September 1945, Japan's Emperor Hirohito said World War II was his deepest regret, according to a document released by the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

Emperor Hirohito told MacArthur, then supreme commander of the Allied Powers that occupied Japan after its surrender and commander of the U.S. Army forces in the Far East, that he had truly wanted to avoid war.

However, the document, which records their talks at the U.S. embassy in Tokyo on Sept. 27, 1945, does not include remarks often attributed to the Emperor, offering to shoulder …
