HEALTH chiefs have been forced to pay out for private surgery after being billed by a woman who claimed she felt unsafe in an NHS hospital.
Retired teacher Jill Baker, 69, said she had to go private because she had previously been infected with a drug-resistant superbug when treated at St Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth, for stomach cancer.
Her ordeal was made worse because a doctor had written "Do not resuscitate" on her notes as she fought for her life against the MRSA bacteria. "They did that because they thought I wasn't worth treating, " she said.
