A huge car bomb ripped through two bars packed with foreign tourists on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, killing at least 187 people in an attack outraged world leaders condemned as an act of terrorism.

The explosion late Saturday destroyed the bars and nearby buildings in the popular tourist district of Kuta, triggering an intense blaze which burned for hours.

Indonesian authorities confirmed at least 187 people were killed and another 309 injured in the explosion, 90 of them critically. The vast majority of the casualties were foreign tourists.

Many of the victims were Australians although Indonesians, Britons, Swiss, Germans, Swedes, Americans, Ecuadorans, Italians, South Koreans and South Africans were also among the dead or wounded.
