One of the most important paintings of the 19th century has been bought by the National Galleries for more than 2m pounds. The scottish National Portrait Gallery received a 1.8 million pound grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable it to buy The Golfers by Charles Lees.The Gallery director James Holloway said acquiring the painting was a great coup for Scotland. As well as the lottery grant,the gallery received 75,000 pounds from the National Art Collections Fund and 250,000 pounds from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Mr Holloway said:''Due to the popularity of golf,this picture is known throughout the world.Few people have seen the original as it has been privately owned for a century and a half.Now it is a painting for everyone to enjoy.''
