Losing Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is not all that needs to happen to put the current US administration on track. In short, a whole new strategy is needed. As the US builds up for a possible war with Iraq, unsupported by the international community, it is clear that America has lost its way.
The most powerful nation on earth America may be but even military dictators don't rule in a vacuum. Rather, they build coalitions of support and pragmatically adapt policies that are unpopular or unworkable.
America is only a superpower by virtue of its links with the international economy. From economics follows the political dimension. International free trade and global capitalism cannot flourish without the active support of like-minded governments and international bodies such as the IMF and World Bank, much maligned as these institutions are.
