Instants d'un Opera de Pekin (Moments from a Beijing Opera) was composed as the required piece for the semi-final round of the 2000 Concours d'interpretation Olivier Messiaen (Olivier Messiaen Interpretation Competition). The work pays homage to the older composer and reveals a fascinating amalgam of French and Chinese musical influences. Messiaen observed that Qigang Chen's works "reveal a real inventiveness, a great talent and a perfect assimilation of Chinese thought to European musical conceptions."
