"Does the music world need yet another collection of etudes?" I would have to answer with an enthusiastic, "Yes? after looking at this collection from Suzanne Guy. The eighteen pieces include many familiar works from Bartok, Beyer, Czerny, Duvernoy, Gurlitt, Kohler, Le Couppey, Schumann, Schytte and Streabbog. The surprises are from Beethoven and Rowley--Village Dance and Impatience--I am not familiar with these two works.
Another definite plus to the collection is the page labeled "Practice Suggestions" for students and performers. Here, Suzanne suggests, "Prepare yourself physically using this checklist." Then she lists exercises for the shoulders, upper arms, forearms, wrists and fingers. These calisthenics are followed by a suggested routine for approaching the etudes--everything from scanning for specific technical elements to using your imagination.
