European stock markets opened modestly higher on Tuesday as investors brushed aside a disappointing overnight performance by US shares. The pan-European FTSE Eurotop 100 index rose 0.5 per cent to 1,820.05, while the Xetra Dax index in Frankfurt rose 1.1 per cent.
