THE great Arthur Lydiard was a post-marathon event dinner speaker at Whangamata a few years back and he told of the time he coached a European athletic team. He advised against taking a young runner to the Olympics as he was not ready.

They said no, we'll take him for the experience of the big event. He ran last in his only heat; but four years later without the butterflies of his first Olympics, won the gold medal. You need big event experience.

Last year the Warriors were thrashed in their only final game by the Eels, but they gained valuable finals experience which no doubt helped when the Sharks drew level with the wind …
